Santa Barbara

Two buddies of mine from medschool and I drove up to Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara is a high roller town where celeberties frequent. I'm pretty sure we almost saw Denzel at Vons Grocery) to hang out with some women we didn't know for two days. I was like, "alright, I guess I'll go hang out with babes for a while." We had a lot fun on the quick trip. When we got there we ate at the California Pizza Kitchen and then went down to the beach for a bonfire. We had no wood, but us three manscouts gathered scraps of wood and before long we had a six-foot flame that was uncomfortably hot.

The next day we played some highly competitive volleyball on the beach. One game two girls took on us three guys and they nearly beat us!! We didn't have a rematch. We also played in the waves and I, of course, got sunburned again.

The beautifal and calm coast of Santa Barbara

I thought this was a bad idea, but succumbed to peer pressure.

She's holding all 250 lbs of my dead weight. She must work out.

You won't believe it but we saw Maverick and Goose playing Iceman and that other guy. The score was like 39,877 to 39,878. Apparently neither side has won by two yet. Man those guys are competitive, Mav still looked pretty good in those jeans though. You'd think damp, sandy, tight jeans would chafe if you played volleyball.

They also showed us the campus of Westmont College. Nice campus! I thought I was at some kind of Health spa or something.

Finally we dropped Jon off at the Staples Center in LA so that he could go to a Tim McGraw/Faith Hill Soul2Soul tour II concert! He had box seats and everything! I don't think he even knows who they are!!! Life is not fair. Anyway we got a pic in front of the magnificent Magic Johnson statue, which was cool.

(Jon, Kevin, and Josh the Navigator)
So that was pretty much it.

The Best Things in Life are Free (a heartfelt post)

I've sorta taken a summer sabbatical, a hiatus if you will from blogging. I've been involved in a surgery preceptorship for the last four weeks and it has been quite an experience. I wish I could have taken some pictures of the things I saw, but that would violate privacy laws and if Loma Linda found out they would terminate me immediately and use me as a cadaver.

So in lieu of a surgery post I will do a post on a "free thing."

Item 1: The San Mateo House entertainment center. I'm quite proud of this pearl we found. Brian, my new roommate, and I went down to the white house and found this puppy. The white house is a place where students can go and find free stuff that people donate when they move away. But I realized that this is not really free at all, actually FAR from it since I've had to pay many tens of thousands for school in order to qualify for free stuff at the white house. And while we think it is rather nice, most people would call it a piece of crap, so it is therefore not the best either.
So when does the phrase apply that "the best things in life are free?" I was beginning to be discouraged that this phrase is utterly false and life has very little meaning. But after pondering this question for seconds and seconds, a revelation came to me.

FAMILY

You didn't ask for them, you didn't know them, and yet you were given to them and they were given to you. They didn't cost a dime and your stuck with them no matter what. I'm not trying to make them sound cheap, but they are indeed the BEST.

So now you know why come "the best things in life are free."
